Hello all,

I'm hoping some of you may have some suggestions to help me dig myself
through a bit of a wall. I have tracked my COULSON line back to the 1840's,
mostly in the Hexham and Newcastle areas. They have been difficult <g> from
the start. My current block is with John COULSON, born between 1845 and
1848. My problem is, there were two John COULSONs born in Hexham in this
period. My sources are as follows:

1866 Marriage cert. - age full -therefore 1845/6 - father Baty COULSON
1882 Marriage cert. - age 35 - therefore 1846/7 - father blank
1881 census - age 33 - therefore 1847, Hexham
1891 census - age 44 - therefore 1848, Hexham

I know with absolute certainty that all four sources pertain to *my* John
COULSON. While I was aware of the existence of another John COULSON born
about the same time, I sent for the birth certificate (23 Nov 1847). The
father on this certificate is John COULSON, not Baty. The birth
place/residence is Haugh Lane. My John's residence in 1881 was Haugh Lane.
Right location, wrong father. The BVRI shows the other John christened 18
Mar 1846, child of Margaret COULSON.

1851 Census Hexham
HO107/2414/482, Coulson,Ann 65,Margaret 26,James 6,John 5

1861 Census Hexham, has James 16, and John 15 on same folio/pg. My John's
1866 marriage certificate has a James COULSON as a witness.

1882 addresses for John and his future second wife are (from Marriage
Cert.): 12 Swan St., and 29 High Villa Place, both in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
I spent last evening going through the 1881 Newcastle census entries in the
hope that one of the addresses occupants may provide a clue. I was not able
to find either street mentioned in the entries. I find it hard to believe
neither street would exist one year earlier.

So, two John COULSONs, mine with a tie to each I have found: one with a
brother James, another born at Haugh Lane, Hexham, where mine is found forty
years later on the census. Neither has a visible tie to the reported father
of mine. All searches of the 1881 census, BVRI, and IGI for a Baty or
Bartholomew COULSON come up empty.

Any suggestions, before I pull out my last 5 hairs? <g>
