Hi Norman
I can't relate any of my ROEs to Byker but then I have not got further than
the grandparents who took off when my father and uncle where young.
I would really like to find out where granddad and grandma went, who they
went with and who are their descendants!
It's tough to get blocked at such an early stage.
I guess it is not as bad as spending 30 years researching the family and
then finding that one is adopted! (An anecdote on the London list)
Best wishes with your search.
Val,
I don't know if these relate to your own family, but the 1881 census
shows a ROE family living at Byker, Newcastle:
Dwelling: 17 Mawson St
Leonard ROE M 29 M Derby, England
Rel: Head
Occ: Cork Cutter
Margaret A. ROE M 24 F Newcastle
Rel: Wife
Thomas ROE 5 M Newcastle
Rel: Son
Hannah ROE 6 F Newcastle
Rel: Daur
Occ: Scholar
Elise ROE 2 F Newcastle
Rel: Daur
Robert ROE U 19 M Newcastle
Rel: Broth
Thomas REDMAYNE U 23 M London Camden Town, London, Middlesex,
England
Rel: Boarder
Occ: Cartman
My own interest is in Thomas REDMAYNE. He married in 1881 and the
marriage was witnessed by John Roe and Margaret Ann Roe. Margaret Ann
Roe was the wife of Leonard Roe, a cork cutter who was the head of
household (17 Mawson St) where Thomas Redmayne was lodging. John Roe
lived at 30 Rosedale Terrace, Byker and was the son of a cork cutter.
John Roe was a cartman like Thomas Redmayne. The two Roe families are
clearly linked by common occupations and John Roe had a sister also
called Margaret A Roe, although she was too young to be the witness.
Its not clear how closely Thomas REDMAYNE knew the ROE family. He was
estranged from his parents whom I've been unable to positively
identify. I don't know if he was abandoned like your ROEs
regards,
Norman Jessup
I am searching for information on the ROE family of Hartlepool. My
father
William and his brother Stanley were abandoned, it seems by both parents
around 1906. Grandmother Charlotte, nee WILSON went to Canada leaving
the
boys to be raised by my paternal ggrandparents, another William ROE and
wife.
My father never referred to his dad so I believe he left Hartlepool
also. I
have a lead that says grandfather William ROE went to Nelson, Lancs and
remarried and raised a second family.
Grandfather William ROE had younger sisters brought up with my father
and
uncle. I know one was named Hannah ROE.
I'd like news of the family at grandfather's level, of brothers and
sisters
of William ROE. Family history has it that ggrandfather William was
born in
Ireland. I'd like to verify this and iron out a few other mysteries.
