Hi,

Question -- does anyone know who the parents of Thomas Palmer of London,
England b. 1583 and d. bef. 1637 in North Farnham Parish, Accomac
County, Colonial Virginia were? Does he fit anywhere into the posted
Palmer family posted by Peter Burrows of Annapolis, MD? His wife was
Joane Jordan born in England and died after 1637 in VA. Any info on her
would be appreciated. Some descendants of this Palmer line ended up in
NC, Union Co., SC; Pike, Spencer & Gibson Counties, IN; Washington, DC;
suburban MD and back to NC (that's me!). My Thomas Palmer had to have
been "landed gentry" or had ample funds upon his arrival in Colonial
Virginia as he served in the House of Burgesses. Thanks.

Dear Jack Heine . . very interesting, and I thank you for all of this
detail. I am sure than many others on the PALMER LIST have similar
info, and are connected to these lines. I have an E-mail note 7-26-00
from Wm. B. Palmer () providing much info and he
states that ancestor line and apprx. birth year to Sir William Palmer
was:

John Palmer 1280
Adam Palmer, 1313
Robert Palmer I 1339
Robert Palmer II 1365
John Palmer I 1397
John Palmer II 1423
Robert Palmer 1480
Sir Thomas Palmer 1508
Sir William Palmer 1545

In any case, my own line is . . .
Lieut. William Palmer & Judith Feake
Ephraim Palmer b. 1642 & Sarah Messenger b. 1545
John Palmer b. 1682 & Elizabeth Sarah Close b. 1684
Justus Palmer 1727-1771 & Amy Ferris
Ephraim Palmer b. 1760 CT d. 1852 IL & Margaret Force b 1765 NJ, d 1809
NY
Thomas Force Palmer 1787-1865 & Rebeckah Snow 1790-1854

They were the grand parents of my grand father.

I will circulate your information for the benefit of others who are
interested in these lines, and maybe we can continue to refine some of
the details. Thank you very much. Peter Burrows, Annapolis, MD.

Notes for SARAH ANN PALMER:
Name is English, originally designated one who had been to Jerusalem, in
fulfillment of a vow or in repentance for sin; to advertise his piety he
might carry a palm branch (that would be then brought to be deposited on
the altar of the Parish church) or a cross made of two short slips or a
leaflet from the palm tree. Visits to the Holy Land or to some sacred
shrine could call for the application of the sobriquet. As it was easy
to acquire the name and reputation by caring a palm branch, some pious
frauds undoubtedly became so name without having made the arduous trip.
She arrived on the Mayflower II in 1629. She died of a fever epidemic
in 1633.

Notes for HENRY ROWLEY:
President Ulysses S. Grant and Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill
descend from this Family. Henry Rowley was probably born in England.
There are a number of conflicting claims as to his origin, but
documentation has not been forthcoming. He was first found in the
opening chapter of the Plymouth Colony Court Records, when he was taxed.
There are a number of references to him as he participated in various
tasks in the colony . His was one of the first marriages recorded, when
he was re-married to Anne Elsdon, 17 October 1633. He was one of the
first to greet the Rev. John Lothrop, when he first arrived in Scituate
after being released from the Tower of London. Lothrop's diary leads
one to believe that Henry Rowley was part of his congregation when
Archbishop Laud's men arrested many at Blackfriars in London. If so,
that may explain why we are unable to determine in what manner he
arrived at Plymouth. Perhaps he was spirited away in the dark of the
night and smuggled aboard a vessel without being recorded as being
there. His genealogy from Henry Rowley, Planter of Plymouth follows:

1. Henry Rowley m. Sarah (Palmer ?)
2. Sarah Rowley m. Jonathan Hatch
3. Joseph Hatch m. Amy Allen
4. Amy Hatch m. Jonathan Delano Jr.
5. Susanna Delano m. Noah Grant Jr.
6. Noah Grant [III] m. Rachel Kelley
7. Jesse Robert Grant m. Hannah Simpson
8. Ulysses S. Grant, President of the United States

1. Henry Rowley m. Sarah (Palmer ?)
2. Sarah Rowley m. Jonathan Hatch
3. Joseph Hatch m. Amy Allen
4. Rebecca Hatch m. Nathaniel Berry
5. Rebecca Berry m. John Beach
6. Mehitable Beach m. Ambrose Hall
7. Ambrose Hall m. Clarissa Willcox
8. Clarissa Hall m. Leonard Jerome
9. Jennie Jerome m. Lord Randolph Churchill
10. Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill. He was an early planter at
Plymouth, Mass., where he was taxed in 1632,

Children of SARAH PALMER and HENRY ROWLEY are:
i. SARAH10 ROWLEY, b. 11 August 1625, England; d. 17 December 1710; m.
JONATHAN HATCH, 11 April 1646, Barnstable, Mass; b. Abt. 7 September
1625, England; d. 10 December 1710, Falmouth, Barnstable County, Ma.

Notes for SARAH ROWLEY:
Name from Saxon; row, sweet or pleasant, and ley, a field. Sarah
married Jonathan when she was 13 years old and he was about 21.

Notes for JONATHAN HATCH:
Live in West Barnstable, came to Massachusetts Bay Colony from England
in 1634, he lived to be 84 years old. Held title of Captain. Was a
soldier under Miles Standish in expedition against the Narragansetts.
