The following exchange between Gordon Pace of Canada and myself may be of
great interest to many on this mail list:

Yes, this is the way I had figured it. Several clues, mainly of Sheriffhales
Paces, seemed to link George Pace to the Paces of Sheriffhales and I have
tried to find his links to the Prees Pace family, where he was born but more
clues showed up linking him to Sheriffhales than Prees, strangely enough.
George Pace married twice, I am a descendent of his second marriage,
Elizabeth PICKEN. They married 30 Dec 1708 Ranton Staffordshire.
They seemed to have only one child, registered as Joseph PACE, born Ranton
Staffordshire
Christening: 10 Sep 1709 at Ranton, Staffordshire (about 25 miles east of
PREES.)
Sometime after George's 2nd marriage at Ranton, Staffordshire to Elizabeth
PICKEN they moved about 15 miles south to SHARESHILL, Staffordshire about the
1720s.
There are several facts I've discovered, connecting George Pace of Prees to
the Pace family of Sheriffhales, Shropshire.
One is the PICKEN name is very popular in SHIFNAL, Shropshire, a market town
about 3 miles south of SHERIFFHALES, where George Pace's brother, JOHN PACE
seemed to settle and married Elizabeth INGLETHORPE in 1699.
Another is the CHERRINGTON surname, which shows up a few times in the
SHERIFFHALES Pace family and also as a church warden at nearby NORBURY,
Staffordshire where brother GEORGE PACE my 6X gg/f was married to Mary
COTTERELL.19 Oct 1693
<A HREF="http://www.phc.igs/~gordpace/uk/cotterell.htm">http://www.phc.igs/~gordpace/uk/cotterell.htm</A>;
Mary COTTERELL, 1st wife of GEORGE PACE, died 15 Apr 1708 at Ranton, about 10
days after the birth of GEORGE PACE, son of GEORGE PACE and Mary Cotterell.

This is a remarkably long distance for Shropshire of about 20 miles. Somehow,
I think George PACE was closely connected to the Pace family of Sheriffhales
in the 1690s, more so than he was to the PACE family of PREES, where he was
born, except for the Prees family of GROOM, which seems to show up in
Kentucky. I have also done a study on the Groom family and they are in large
numbers in the parish of PREES, Shropshire.

Actually, my 6X gg/f and his brother seemed to be both sons of a JOSEPH PACE
and MARGARET who showed up in the parish of WROCKWARDINE where JOHN PACE was
born in 1665. GEORGE was born 1670, father JOSEPH.
Also at WROCKWARDINE and nearby WELLINGTON, Shropshire
were found the following Christenings:
John PACE - Batch Number: C037524
Christening: 25 Jan 1675 Wellington Shropshire
Father: John PACE
Mother: Jone
Mary PACE
Christening 12 Dec 1677 Wrockwardine Shropshire
Father: John PACE
Mother: Jone
Hannah PACE - Batch Number: C037524
Christening: 7 Oct 1681 Wellington Shropshire
Father
Mother: Jone PACE
Considering the dates of the Christenings, and that there were no other Paces
to be found at Wrockwardine or Wellington (about 2 miles away) at that time,
I figure that this JOHN may have been the brother of JOSEPH, who was father
to my GEORGE and his brother JOHN PACE of Sheriffhales who married Elizabeth
INGLETHORPE.
It looks, strangely enough, that this JOHN may be the John Pace of Middlesex
Co.
Both this JOHN PACE and what looks to be his brother, JOSEPH my 7X gg/f do
not show up again in any Shropshire parish registers, I've come across. May
they have both gone off to Virginia? This is a bit of speculation but look at
the choice of Christian names in John of Middlesex's family and then look at
the Christian names of the John of Wrockwardine's family and again look at
the Christian names of Joseph's sons JOHN and GEORGE.
The female name of Margaret shows up in ALL families, for generations. Even
in the descendent Pace family that went to Iowa and Kansas, William
Cherrington Pace, descendents of the JOHN PACE who married Elizabeth
INGLETHORPE at Sheriffhales in 1699.

Yes, the Wrockwardine parish register seems to show this is possible. It
would be a good idea to order the microfilm of Wrockwardine and Wellington,
Shropshire, parish registers from Salt Lake City and look for Paces. also
look for PEACE at Shrewsbury, about 10 miles to the west.

Look at <A HREF="http://www.phc.igs.net//~gordpace/uk/shifnal.htm#kansas">http://www.phc.igs.net//~gordpace/uk/shifnal.htm#kansas</A>;
One of them was even buried at Portland Oregon but I don't think there were
any descendents.
The Pace Bulletin of last spring contained an article by Diane Hinshaw about
some Paces in Kansas who were descendents of William Cherrington Pace who was
from Shifnal, Shropshire and emigrated with a few family menbers in 1851 to
Iowa. Maybe some are still out there.
