A few months ago I posted the Information that Betsy Rogers, whose
great-grandmother was Marie Antoinette (Pace) Strickland was named Alabama
Teacher-of-the-Year.
This past Wednesday, in a White House Rose Garden Ceremony, Betsy was honored
by President Bush as National Teacher of the Year, a first for an Alabama
Educator.
The Birmingham (Ala) News (April 29) quotes Betsy as saying, "My whole issue
is equity in education. I really wish we had a country where there was no
need for legislation because we would take care of all our children. It is
unthinkable some children do not have the best facilities and a nuturing,
safe environment. My message is that all children should have a quality
education."
The article points out that Alabama has one of the largest funding
disparities between school districts and Alabama's overall financial support
for public education is among the lowest.
A teacher since 1974, Betsy took six years off to raise two sons. Later, she
picked up three graduate degrees and is most known for her interest in
working with first and second graders that come from impoverished
backgrounds. She will take a year off for a national and international
speaking tour but instead of coming back to an administrative position or a
teaching position in a higher paying district she has already inquired of her
Superintendent about a job in a county school on academic alert because of
poor test scores.
