Hi:

I have ran across that story as well. I do find court documents that seem
to indicate this may be true.

In Jefferson County, TN, Grand Jury Minutes for June 1815 is found the
following:

Page 322:
The grand Jurors presented to court at this term that six children of
Elizabeth Gann are in a suffering situation. And it is ordered by court
that a ? (not able to make this word out) issue to the Sheriff of Jefferson
County to bring them in at the next term of this court to show cause why
they would not be bound out. to wit Alexander, Henry, Jane, Solomon, Abraham
and Louis.

In Jefferson County, TN, Grand Jury Minutes for March 1816 is found the
following:

Page 377:
Henry Fairer alias Gann now sixteen years of age by order of the court
bound by Indenture to Lewis Franklin until he arrives at the age of
twenty one.

Page 378:
Solomon Gann now of the age of twelve years old by order of court bound
by Indenture to Michael Branner Junior untill he arrives at the age of
twenty one
Alexander Fairer, alias Gann now in the eighteenth year of his age since
the first of December last by order of the court bound by Indenture to
Francis Collins untill he arrives at the age of twenty one.
Abraham Gann now ten years old by order of the court bound by Indenture
to Gasper Branner untill he arrives at the age of twenty one

From this it would appear that Henry and Alexander may have been
children of a previous marriage.
